redwood

Today I've been to the redwood forest, then to the coast, near crescent city and brookings. And here are some photos.
And here some other photos I took a few days before in Grants Pass with all the cats sleeping on the same chair.

for the next CopyFS release

I didn't really take time to do it yet, but there is some work that needs to be done on CopyFS. The main problem with it now it that it can take a lot of space to save all the versions of all files, so I think the following features should be added for the next release :
  • An option in fversion to remove some versions (or all) from a file
  • For a directory, be able to give a regexp (or globbing) about which files should be kept, and which should not. For example you might not want to keep all files ending with ~ (for emacs temporary files). This will apply on files in the directory, and subdirectories.
  • An option that can be set on a directory (that will apply to the files in this directory) or to files directly to tell how many version back should be kept, or how many days back.
  • And maybe for an other release latter try to use diff, so that it does not take so much space when only a small part of a file is modified

if you're looking for a dedicated server

If you're looking for a cheap dedicated server in the USA, look at vrtservers.net. It's cheap, you can choose your OS (Debian, FreeBSD, Fedora Core, CentOS ...), and it's working quite well (at least the one I've been using for one month now).
In France, Lost Oasis is quite good too.

cow creek road

Today is saturday. This afternoon I didn't really know what to do, so I took the car, and decided to drive on the I5 to Roseburg. Actually I took the Riddle exit. Then I saw on my map that there is a small road between Riddle and Glendale (Glendale is an other small city near the I5, on the south). This road is called the cow creek road.

I drove for some time on this road, then decided to go on a small path near the main road to see where it was going.

Actually there was not only one path, but a lot. A very big labyrinth in thoses small mountains full of trees, with no-one :)
After 1/2h I decided to come back to the main road. Did I come from left or right on this path ? That was not always easy to remember :)
Then back on the main road I drove about 15 minutes and found this bridge.

When stopping there I also saw there was someone fishing near the river: I was not alone in this big forest !!
Then it was almost night. There was 2 roads, one on the left, one on the right over a bridge. Which one take ? I didn't know, but on the map, it didn't seem I had to cross a bridge, so I took the left road. If I was where I though I was on the map, then it shouldn't take a lot of time before I can take the I5. I drove for some time, but still nothing. And the road was smaller and smaller, with sometimes some peaces of wood on the border of the road, or some rocks. I didn't have a lot of gas, so I decided to come back. It was then night, and completly dark. I wanted to come back to the bridge. But there was a lot of smaller roads on the left and rights, and I was always wondering if I really was on the same road I was before, as I didn't recognize anything (and it seemed to be too long). I had no idea where I was, and wanted to ask someone, but I was complety alone. I finally arrived at the bridge. There I took the other road (crossing the bridge), and I saw a car parked here. I had seen someone fishing and that was his car. I found him near the river, and asked him if he knew the road to Glendale. He told me to just stay on the main road and I would arrive to Glendale, that it is where he was from, and that I could follow him if I wanted. And that's what I did. After 20 or 30 minutes I was in Glendale. I was back to where there are people living :)
It was then easy to get back to the I5. And if you're lost, it's easy to get help, just stop on the border of the road, and someone will probably come. I stopped 2 times (not because I was lost), and 2 times someone came a few seconds after I stopped to help me find the right road :)

Death penalty for spammers

It's too bad we have to close wiki and blog comments because of spammers.

Let's ask the death penalty for spammers. And before we can kill the spammers, start by killing their servers (they give us the links to their websites).

weekend in los angeles

Last weekend I had decided to go to the Southern California Linux Expo in Los Angeles. It's quite far, and I decided to take the bus (maybe flying or driving would have been better after all, I'll see next time). And you don't sleep very well in the bus :)

So I arrived on friday afternoon in Los Angeles, at about 4pm, and it was raining. I had a reservation for the student inn international hostel (which is quite cheap) on Hollywood Blvd, and my problem was to go there. I walked a little from the greyhound station on the 7th street, and that's where I found that some places in Los Angeles doesn't look safe. And finding a map, with the metro and bus lines is not that easy ... After walking for some time (and a little scared alone in this part of the city), I decided to take a bus that was stopping there. I didn't know the price, so I gave 5$, but she (the bus driver) told me they don't have change in the bus, but she let me stay for free as I seemed to be new in this city. After some time the bus stopped for some reason (I think the bus had some technical problems and needed to be changed). I was now in Downtown LA (where there was a lot more people, in a place which seemed more safe). I was looking the streets names on my map, when some people helped me find the nearest metro station (after walking about 5 minutes), showed them the address where I wanted to go, and they told me I had to go to Hollywood/Vine. I was then able to buy a ticket (it's $3 to be able to take any metro or bus for one day), then took the metro, and walked 30 minutes on hollywood blvd before finding the hostel (and I found that the Hollywood/Highland station was closer).

The next day I walked a little in hollywood, before taking the metro and bus to go the the LA Convention Center.

Some of the presentations was quite interesting.

After that the night was falling, and I decided to take a bus to go anywhere (in china town where there was a lot of people, then some place where there was some fun-fair, and a bridge over the highway).

I came back to Hollywood Blvd, and walked from one end to the other end. There was a lot of animation here, a lot of people ... After that it was about 11:30pm, so it was time to go sleep.

Then next day ... everything look different when it's no more night

Some roads was closed, I didn't know exactly why, so I had to take a different way (which was not a bad idea).

In the afternoon I saw why they had closed some roads.

A lot of limo cars, probably from rich people. I don't know what they were doing, but I don't really care about people who pretend to be stars because they have a lot of money or they're on tv (actually I think I hate show business), so I didn't stay and decided to take the metro to Long Beach (and see the sea before leaving).

Then it was night ...

Then it was time to come back ...

In downtown LA to find a bus to go to greyhound. There are a lot of people whithout money sleeping in the streets.

The road where I wanted to take the bus was closed as they was making a movie.

So I walked a little more ... That's where I met someone else going to greyhound, speaking french (and living in the US for about 3 years).

(I like the phones here)
Then I took the greyhound bus, and arrived about 17 hours later in Grants Pass (after some stops in various cities in central California).

That was a good weekend ! I hope I'll be able to come back to Los Angeles in the futur (with a car) ...
Next cities to visit are Portland and Seattle (I don't know when).

Visiting San Fransisco

Last week end I've been to San Francisco. I know someone in San Jose, and we had decided some time ago to see us that week end, unfortunatly he had other unexpected things to do that week end, and could not be there. But I decided to go anyway to San Francisco to visit a little by myself. So I drove from Grants Pass to San Francisco on friday afternoon.

Arrived in Redding before night ...

Tried some small road in the night, near the highway. But I came back :)

Then after a few more hours, I arrived in Berkley and found a YMCA Hostel, for $39, not too expensive (maybe I could have find something even cheaper, but it was late, and I was too tired to search more).

The next day was sunny and I was able to see how SF is a beautiful city. People living there are lucky.

Then I went to the Golden Gate Bride

I took a road on the left after the bridge.

Then it was time to walk a little ...

Then back in the car ...

back to the city ...

Then it was Sunday morning ...

that's a beautiful city ...

Of course I've been to Lombard Street ...

China Town ...

Then it was time to come back home ...

I wanted to take the 101 to come back, but it was a little late, and I was not sur I had enought time, so I took the I5 (and that was a good idea).

Now I know San Francisco is really a great City, and I'll have to come back.

This week end I don't really know what to do. Maybe I'll go tomorrow to RedWood.

I saw that next week is the Southern California Linux Expo in Los Angeles. That seems interesting, and I will try to go there. However, Los Angeles is quite far :) I like to drive alone, listenning to the radio, in an unknown place, but driving more than 12 hours in one day might be too much for me. So I'm not sure if I should go by car, or take the Bus with greyhound. I think I'll take the bus.
