epita is down
Looks like everything at epita is unreachable. I asked someone there, and there is a power failure, so everything is down :) Quite funny (it's much more funny when it happens to others).
The good thing is that I'll probably receive a lot less spam today.

encryption software soon illegal ?
In this article, we can see that A Minnesota appeals court has ruled that the presence of encryption software on a computer may be viewed as evidence of criminal intent. I probably have a lot of criminal intents as I (like a lot of people) use that kind of software everyday.

chernobyl
I see that this website has been updated. More scary pictures of Chernobyl with more details (but I didn't really look at it yet, I'll do that at home). I don't know if everything is true on this website (some people say it's fake), but visiting Chernobyl now must be fun, even if a little dangerous.

this weekend
Hmm, so I did nothing special this weekend (at least, nothing worth mentionning here, or that I should remember), except this afternoon. I had nothing to do, so I drove a little in the forrest taking pictures, and thoses 3 small videos : 1 2 3

Then back in Grants Pass ...

This afternoon I also spent some time looking at old pictures I had taken before. And found thoses (I put them back online) that I took last year when driving to Athis Mons last year. It's been a long time since I didn't take this road (or any road like that). And also thoses pictures which I find quite funny. And now I'm listenning to Asia - The Smile Has Left Your Eyes before going to sleep.
This week I have to work on the report I have to do for school for my intership (and abstract and xml document for the end of next week).

Magic Radio is back !
I just saw that Magic Radio is back online and that's good ! Here is the ogg stream. That's one of the best frennch webradio I know.
For other good webradios there is also sky.fm, Digitally Imported, and DeepMix. Radio404 is good too because it's only free music. That's what I listen to when I don't know what to download, or don't want to spend time choosing music :)

about DRMs ...
rom an other blog, Reading this article on slashdot, we can read this interesting comment about what they're trying to do with DRM :
All this DRM technology will fail its intended purpose because the MPAA companies are trying to protect a 20th century marketplace that is fading ever more each day.
20th century film marketing was based on the pay-per-view model where a central facility (the movie theater) charged each person a fixed fee (the box office admission) for each showing of the film. It didn't matter which film was showing; customers paid the same entry fee. Unpopular product would not collect as many fees as a more-popular title.
In this model there is no price flexibility for the consumer. It's strictly take-it-or-leave-it. This model works when there is a limited number of viewing openings available (the seats in the theater) and limited product (one print of the film per theater and only a dozen copies of the film in the metro area).
This model fails when there is nearly unlimited product (all film titles from the past 50 years) on DVD or unlimited view openings. What happens in this type of market is that the consumers get to bid on what they will pay and the terms that they will pay for the product. The new technology has changed the marketplace by removing most of the previous restrictions. The new technology is not going away.
DRM is an attempt to force the previous market conditions onto the new business environment. The MPAA companies (the film studios) want to have the highly profitable previous marketplace conditions with the greatly expanded marketplace made available by DVD. Beaucoup bucks if you can make it happen.
But it won't work. What will happen if the MPAA companies actually get DRM to work is that the market for film product will shrink to a small percentage of what it is today.
Successfully integrating DRM into film industry product is not going to bring back the old way of presenting film entertainment product. It's just going to drive the current film consuming public into some other form of entertainment.
One of the reasons that parents are encouraged to read fairy tales to their children is that it is an effective way to get the collective wisdom of the ages passed on to the adults of the modern age who are too vain to listen to good advice coming from any other source. The fairy tale that the MPAA should pay attention to the story of the goose that laid golden eggs. This goose would lay one egg a day of pure gold. The villagers got greedy and decided to kill the goose, cut it open and get all the golden eggs that must be inside. This they did. And they found no gold inside. And they never got any more golden eggs.
Like the villagers, the film studios don't understand the new film market. Adding DRM to the product that is providing their golder eggs will be like killing the goose.

What will I do next ?
In less than 2 months my internship will be finished :/ That's bad (because I'll have to come back in france, and I like beeing here) but that's also good (because I also like beeing in france, and see the people I know in France). So I'll have to find something else to do after that. Or maybe come back here if ever I can ? I don't really know. I didn't write a lot of code thoses last 6 months (except scripts and that kind of stuff), and I miss that a little. I think my next job should be half writting code, and half system administration. But I should avoid as much as possible thoses big Java programs, or php scripts, because it's not fun :) I don't like to write thousands of lines that do nothing complexe, that's really boring.
What would be great would be kernel programming ... but I have to find that (and first, start looking).

runit
I need to run on a server a program that has to stay always alive. I could just add that to /etc/inittab. Or use something like daemontools which I'm aldready using on this server here. As with most programs from D. J. Bernstein that's working fine, with some excellent ideas, but for a few reasons it's actually not a really good choice :
So I remembered runit, and now I wonder what I didn't use that before.
Something like daemontools, but without the bad points. And there's even a debian package for sarge :)
- It's not free
- He doesn't support anymore his programs and it's not free so we can't do it for him. (actually it's possible like some people do for qmail, but you're only allowed to distribute patch, and no modified versions, so that sucks a little)
- It's not free so it's not very well integrated in a distribution such as Debian. You have to compile it yourself, or use unofficial binay packages (which are maybe not even legal).
- djb uses a strange Filesystem hierarchy for his programs, completly differement from what most people do. That's not the biggest problem, but I don't really like having a /command and /service directory :)

I replaced the names of the posters by XXX, in case they don't want their name on google :)
